Planetary
Dall-Kirkham OTAs |
These complete Dall-Kirkham OTAs are now available upon request. Optical design is optimized for no compromise, small obstruction, high-resolution lunar, planetary and double star visual or imaging use. 8" and 10" sizes are closed tube and 12.5" - 16" are open tube designs. Delivery time depends upon available stock and range from a few weeks to six or eight months. 14.5" and 16" sizes are designed and available but have not been prototyped yet. Read More

In Development 11" f/4.1 Super Houghton Astrograph - Read More Pictures and progress reports to appear as the instrument develops |
Over the current year I will be building the prototype of an astrograph having an amazingly large, flat field. The corrected or super Houghton-Newtonian optical design is capable of producing a flat, diffraction limited (6 µm Airy disk encircled spots) image circle covering 3 degrees of sky. A 1" chip will cover 1.8 degrees of sky completely unvignetted with a 41% obstruction. OTA will feature a carbon fiber tube, Clement Bellerophon III focuser, exhaust fans, and (unlike parabolic mirror near-focal correctors) be comparatively insensitive to misalignment and thermal effects. Price for this model is anticipated to be in the $15,000 range. Other sizes and focal ratios down to f/2.78 and lower possible on special request.

deep sky images from France |
See what Vincent Steinmetz, an expert and dedicated imager, from Strasbourg, France has done with one of my 8" f/4.5 conical mirrors and a Keller corrector. He has built his own astrograph and his work can be seen on his own web page. Here is a spectacular NGC 6888 M101, M81 and M1 (read his comments about zero image shift with a conical). You don't need a big mirror to do exceptional work.

mirrors for Newtonian telescopes.
Compound reflective optical systems including Cassegrain, Ritchey-Chretien, Dall-Kirkham and various modifications. Refractive systems including achromatic and apochromatic objectives and full aperture corrector catadioptric systems including Schmidt, Maksutov and Houghton types along with near focal corrector systems. Both standard full-thickness and conical cross-section mirrors for Newtonian and compound systems. Articles for the amateur about telescope design, construction and use. |
New product for both amateur astronomers and professionals.

The conical cross-section mirror has arrived for Newtonians. Light in weight but no compromise in wavefront accuracy. - And no flotation cell required. Mounting is simplicity itself. The first real advance in lightweight larger aperture Newtonian telescopes. Details inside!
